Donnertrommel

2006.2024, Klassik-Edition, Thomas Weiss (CH)

The thunder drum is one of the few drums that doesn't need (or isn't allowed) to be beaten. Intead, a spring is attached to the head of the thunder drum. When it is shaken, the spring moves and creates a continuous resonance in the body of the instrument. The result is a sound very similar to thunder.

Thunder drums are usually hand-held instruments. They are used musically for the onomatopoeic accompaniment of music, theater, dance, as a percussion instrument in musical education or in rituals.
