In music or in therapeutic contexts, singing bowls are played by running a suede-covered mallet around their outer edge. This produces a sustained tone.
The singing bowl tree consists of four singing bowls that are tuned to each other, one on top of the other and filled with water. When the metal vibrates, the vibration is transmitted to the water: sounds become visible.
