Klanghaus mit Schwendisee und Bergen

Klanghaus

The Klanghaus - a Walk-in Instrument

The Klanghaus Toggenburg is a place where architecture, sound and nature come together in a unique way.

The rooms of the Klanghaus are built like an instrument and offer visitors the opportunity to experience sound and its resonances in a remarkable way. Two outdoor stages invite musical experiments and concerts in the open air by Lake Schwendi.

With its unrivaled acoustics, the Klanghaus will attract musicians from near and far for rehearsals, courses, workshops and seminars.

Constructing Resonances

The Klanghaus Toggenburg is a prime example of new approaches in timber construction. The idea of conceiving and designing the building as a “walk-in instrument” already implies the high structural and aesthetic demands placed on the project. The outstanding result could only be achieved through close collaboration between architecture and timber construction.

Here is a video with the fascinating explanations of the project from the event at the Swiss Baumuster-Centrale Zurich on June 6, 2024

The Klanghaus Toggenburg is a place where architecture, sound and nature can be experienced in a unique symbiosis. The foundation is formed by the thesis papers of Marcel Meili from the thesis competition in 2010. As a 'projection or focus figure' the Klanghaus provides a variety of approaches from a wide range of perspectives. Like the construction project itself, the publication sees itself as a 'research experiment' and is intended to reveal insights. It focuses on architectural aspects and constructive solutions for the extraordinary room acoustics as well as the interaction of the landscape with the natural yodel or the soundscape with the building of the Klanghaus.

The publication combines experienced voices and perspectives from proven experts in architecture, sound art, acoustics, ethnomusicology, art history, philosophy, history and tourism with those of newcomers. It includes self-explanatory 3D architectural and construction drawings, extensive documentation material and various photo series, scores and lyrics.
