Tradition and History
Toggenburg is deeply rooted in rural tradition, characterised by Alpine journeys and cattle shows that enrich life in the valley. The tradition room offers insights into the life of the people of Toggenburg in the past and present, with objects such as the Bähkuh, a toy from times gone by. The fascinating aspects of the natural music of alpine culture include not only yodelling and alpine blessings, but also the dulcimer and the ‘talerbecken’ . Particularly fascinating is the ‘Senntum’, also known as the ‘G'Spiel’, consisting of three harmoniously tuned bells worn by the lead cows. All these sounds are brought to life in the traditional room.
Ueli Ammann (1766-1842), a well-known instrument maker from Unterwasser, defied all obstacles and created extraordinary instruments, including a playable walking stick. His works are appreciated worldwide.
